Fundraising case study – Licking Lassa Fever

31/03/2009

As I write, one brave fundraiser is walking her way to the Everest Base camp, suffering an injured knee and trying to deal with 1000ft ascents and reduction in oxygen.

Cherry Wright, President Elect of Soroptimists International Cardiff, is walking to Everest base camp to raise money for Licking Lassa Fever. Licking Lassa Fever is a regional project of Soroptimist International (SI), a worldwide organisation for women in management and professions, working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women.

The aim of the Licking Lassa Fever project is to establish community education and environmental programmes in rural villages in Sierra Leone by means of:

  • Providing clean water and effective sanitation through new wells and latrines,
  • Providing rat-resistant food storage containers and water bottles,
  • Providing tools and seeds for villagers to grow their own food, and
  • Providing outreach workers to teach villagers how to combat this disease and help themselves.

Cherry flew to Kathmandu on the 28th March. She then had to take another flight to Lukla to begin the ascent on foot to the Everest Base Camp. Her first day’s walking led to unexpected consequences: “Scenically it was all looking pretty good – in fact too good because I kept looking at it as I went along, with the inevitable result that an hour into the first day’s trek, I tripped over a stone and fell flat on my face, my knees and elbows hitting the stone path with a resounding smack.”

Cherry recovered quickly enough to resume her walk: “Going up became an interesting exercise in itself as the altitude started to take hold. All that training in the gym and the Malvern hills doesn’t prepare you for the reduction in oxygen and consequent breathlessness.”

You can follow her trek via her blog on the Licking Lassa Fever website.
